In Hyderabad, amidst controversy surrounding alleged adulteration of the famous Tirupati laddu, artisans at the base of Tirumala are preparing to apply for a geographical indication designation for their intricate wood carvings. These artisans have been creating detailed wooden statues of Lord Balaji and other deities for over a century. Known as Madhavamala wood carvings, their work includes lifelike idols, dolls, toys, house elements, and furniture adorned with ornate floral designs. Represented by the Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, comprising 510 artisans from 309 families, they will submit the GI application later this month with the assistance of NABARD. This will mark the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, with GI practitioner Subhajit Saha supporting the artisans in claiming this designation.
